The MENTOR Initiative is not for profit organisation with over 11 years of experience in carrying out evidence-based disease control programmes and building capacity in malaria and vector borne disease control globally. To date, over 1000 individuals from NGOs, national partners, UN agencies, donors, suppliers and the media have participated in MENTOR’s training programmes

Learn practical skills to prevent outbreaks and control malaria and other vector borne diseases during humanitarian emergencies.

Vector borne diseases are infections transmitted to humans principally by insects. Although malaria remains the most deadly vector borne disease worldwide, it rarely occurs in isolation. This course has been specifically developed to strengthen the capacity of agencies to implement effective and coordinated malaria and vector borne disease control activities, either as a focus or as part of broader disease control activities.

While vital, the focus in combating malaria has often overshadowed the needs of communities afflicted with other vector borne diseases which frequently cause significant suffering and can cause high mortality too. Additionally, the onset of climate change, habitat loss and changes in land use have, in some cases, influenced the rapid spread of other vector borne diseases, such as Zika, Dengue fever and Chikungunya. These circumstances and subsequent outbreaks are exacerbated during humanitarian crises, when communities are at risk from many infections and are often exposed to multiple disease vectors. Often minor adjustments to existing programmes can significantly reduce the suffering endured by vulnerable populations because of flies or disease vectors at this time.

During this course you will learn to identify risk factors and understand the epidemiology and principle prevention, case management, surveillance and monitoring tools useful for diseases transmitted by mosquitoes, sandflies, snails, mites, ticks or rodents to name but a few. Also included are Ebola, Lassa and Marburg viruses.

This course is aimed at equipping both clinical and non-clinical field and HQ staff with the key skills required to identify needs, and develop, prioritise and implement evidence-based control programmes for vector borne diseases.

We look forward to welcoming participants from a range of organisations including, among others: • National and International NGOs • UN Agencies • Donors • National Disease Control Programs; Pubic Health, Emergency management • Medical and International Affairs Students • Suppliers • Media.

OUR GOAL In 5 days you will build up your knowledge and capacity to effectively plan, implement and monitor VBD control in the countries where you serve

What will you learn?

• To identify risk factors and priorities during malaria and vector borne disease infections or outbreaks and gain an understanding of the epidemiology of different types of diseases. • Understand the principles of malaria and vector borne disease control including, as appropriate, surveillance and monitoring, case management (diagnosis, treatment and patient care) and effective personal and community protection strategies. • Be able to prepare and plan for effective priority interventions for the acute emergency context and modify programme approaches according to changes in the situation as the situation moves towards post emergency phase to reconstruction. • Determine the most effective coordination of efforts with national and international partners to address the crises. • Monitor and evaluate the impact of interventions. • Identify operational and technical problems requiring field research. • Identify and quantify project needs for proposal and budgeting development.
